WORKSHOPS

WORKSHOPS

Hands-on lighting workshops for students who want to get into lighting, and experience what it is like to create and design shows.

Mixing colours and gels

We begin with light itself: colour, angle, intensity and shadow.

Introduction to Lighting Design, what it is, where it occurs, and taking first steps into this amazing industry.

Collaborative exploration of gels and traditional incandescent fixtures, with overlaying Q&A.

Understanding the quirks and interesting methods of controlling intelligent lights, and discovering the mechanics of a moving light.

Controlling smart fixtures

From there, the workshop moves into intelligent fixtures and digital control.

Each workshop attendee gets a one on one opportunity to control and tinker with moving lights and a wireless temporary stage setup.

Learning the critical methods of correctly wrapping a cable, a valuable skill that opens the doorway to employment in the AV industry.

Hands on work with industry lighting-control software ETC/EOS, controlling lights, intensities, colours, and creating cues.

Designing a show

The workshop wraps in a group lighting plot, from a musical number or popular song.

The final group exercise takes 45m-1h, where all participants collaborate to design a lighting sequence from any show, musical or song.

Working as a design team, every student can contribute ideas to the look and progression of the piece. Together, we turn those ideas into lighting cues and explore how light can support the rhythm and storytelling of the number.

Each student then gets the opportunity to operate the cues created by the group.

All lighting gear is provided and included, the workshop can be ran anywhere, in any class or functions space.

Block-out blinds, or the ability to make the room dark/blacked out is required.
